Team VermiTEA, Kailua Intermediate
Are you a gardener, farmer, or someone interested in plants? Look no further because VermiTea, a liquid blend of compost and vermicast is the perfect eco-friendly choice for you to help keep Hawaii sustainable. Our vermicast tea provides nutrients and energy to plants, helping our local community to grow and sustain their own food and gardens.
VermiTea is made from sea kelp, vermicast, and composted leftover food from our school lunches and breakfasts. We use a hot composting technology while letting the food waste decompose. We also use vermicomposting technology to harvest vermicast to add to the tea brewers along with the compost, and sea kelp. The “tea” brews and bubble for twenty-four hours before the liquid gold is ready to be used in gardens or farms.
Team VermiTea will also be selling Vermicast Homebrewing Tea Kits which will teach local gardeners how to brew their own vermicast tea. The food waste at KIS is not trucked to the dump, KIS recycles the food waste to be used again to grow more food. What we do through food waste rescue is the true meaning of aloha by helping our ʻaina be sustainable.

About Us:
Kailua Intermediate School participates in the Young Entrepreneurs Program as a project for students to work on after school and outside of school. The students work under the guidance and supervision of the school’s Farm to Fork and Intro Agriculture teacher. Students learn how to run their own businesses, make their own products, learn business etiquette, and management skills. YEP teaches students life skills that will be useful to them in adulthood when working in business and marketing and support themselves.
